"Autism in Action"
Blinn College Hosts
Art for Autism at
Bryan High School
Silver Cafeteria
Saturday, April 11th, 2009
10 am to 6 pm
“Autism in Action” was started last year by Charity Wilson, TSTC’s Student Government President. She’s a mother of a young son with autism. Inspired by his love of art, she created a program to promote autism awareness that focused on helping individuals diagnosed with autism in Region 12's educational service area create original artwork.
School-age children and young people with autism will be provided with an 11" x 14" canvas to paint. Artwork will be auctioned in April to help raise money to benefit the Baylor Autism Resource Center, The Arc Summer Day Camp, and to provide scholarships to graduating students transitioning to College.
Art from all the events will be on exhibit at the Waco Walk for Autism on April 25th, and online bidding will also be available.
The first Art for Autism Day was held at Copperas Cove, at S.C. Lee Jr. High on March 7th. Events were also held at TSTC in Waco on March 21st, and at Navarro College in Corsicana on March 27th.
The Art for Autism day on April 18th in Belton has been cancelled.
For more information please contact Charity Wilson, Student Government President, at 254-867-2079 or sg.president@tstc.edu.
ARC of McLennan County
provides care and support for persons and the families impacted by autism, mental retardation and developmental disabilities.
Each summer the ARC offers and 8-week day camp for children with disabilities, including a unique and specialized curriculum for children with autism.
Many parents would not be able to continue working during the summer if it were not for the ARC Summer Day Camp.
The ARC camp enables parents to know that quality care is being provided for their children during the summer months. For more information, log onto their website.
Baylor Family Resource
Center for Autism
helps fill a critical gap in resources for this region. It first opened to the community on January 28th, 2008, after being awarded a Baylor/Waco Foundation grant.
The center will be utilized by parents, caregivers, educators, trainers, professionals in the field and Baylor students. It will ensure that resources, trainings, workshops, coordination of available services and a team approach is available to the community.
Current projects include facilitating "Social Circle" groups to build interpersonal and social skills for youth with ASD, developing a Central Texas Resource Services Handbook and Website, and establishing a lending library with books, sensory integration materials and motor lab equipment for checkout.
With continued support from the community, the center will expand services and develop new projects related to therapy and research in the field.
For more information about the center, contact Julie Ivey, or log onto their website.
